There has always been a constant need for new
technologies and ways to attain oil. In this regard oil is found in
abundance in offshore locations such as the ocean. Respective of
this fact engineering professionals within the field have developed
improved ways to drill in these areas by creating various types of
oil rigs.
The first offshore platform within the world was constructed in the
late 40s. The platform was located twenty five miles away from the
coast of what is known as Azerbaijan and within the Caspian Sea.
The city of Azerbaijan has a small population of around five
thousand (persons). The oil employees work and reside in the area
and the huge offshore platform has been around for well over six
decades.
When it comes to offshore platforms there are essentially three
different types:
1. One is composed of concrete. It is comprised of legs made of
concrete and transported from land on boats. Once the legs are set
up they will measure from the top of the sea all the way to its
floor. Afterwards all that is needed is to install the offshore
platform on top.
2. Secondly there is what is referred to as the jacked-up offshore
platform. The platform is constructed of a foundation made of
concrete that sits on the sea floor and has metal legs. The legs
will move with the rise and fall of the ocean.
3.Third, the last offshore platform is referred to as the Petronius
platform. It is found in the Gulf of Mexico. It is two thousand
feet atop the sea. It may be considered one of the tallest offshore
platforms in the world.
Drilling on the sea based rigs is much the same as on land. The
primary difference between the offshore setup and the rig found on
land is the offshore rig's storage requirement. Large tanks with
respect to storage may be found underneath the platform or man-made
island.
Certainly these offshore platforms may be considered practical yet
amazing structural accomplishments.
